Childcare is in a beautiful old home named Kowhai Whare situated in park-like surroundings. We also have recently opened a brand new centre next door named Tui Whare which is purpose built to meet the needs of our children, staff and the character of our childcare. The philosophy of Kowhai Childcare is based on the educational principles of Rudolf Steiner.

Waldorf/Steiner Childcare work from the developmental principle that the young child learns in two ways: the first is Imitation, the second is Activity. Therefore our programme is designed to provide children with opportunities to actively imitate and practice quality interactions and work habits through the medium of play. Through play, the children develop cognitive and problem solving skills, creativity, imagination, self-expression, concentration, investigation, language, numeracy and social skills.

The learning that is developed through play is then reinforced and deepened through repetition, in carefully designed daily, weekly, termly and seasonal rhythms. Thus children learn in a secure, known and yet varied environment experiencing and exploring a diverse range of domestic, artistic, creative, construction and outdoor activities.
